Gin is a distilled alcoholic drink that derives its flavour from juniper berries and other botanical ingredients. Gin interestingly originated as a medicinal liquor made by monks and alchemists across Europe, as a matter of fact. The modern gin as we know it today, was then modified in Flanders and the Netherlands, to provide aqua vita from distillates of grapes and grains. It then became an object of commerce in the spirits industry. Gin became popular in England after the introduction of jenever, a Dutch and Belgian liquor that was originally consumed as a medicine. Although this development had been taking place since the early 17th century, gin became widespread after the 1688 Glorious Revolution led by William of Orange and the subsequent import restrictions on French brandy. Gin subsequently emerged as the national alcoholic drink of England, and the rest…is history as they say.
Gin today is produced in different ways from a wide range of herbal ingredients, giving rise to almost countless different and distinct styles and brands. Allow your gin to stand out as unique and decidedly “special”, by adding the distinct and unmistakable CARBOCRAFT BOTANICAL touch! CARBOCRAFT supplies the ABC of botanicals, from angelica root to juniper berry, to citrus fruit…whatever your heart desires, we are here to serve your every BOTANICAL need. An award-winning gin has a typical and very unmistakable flavour profile. Besides high-grade neutral alcohol, it is the fruit of the common juniper tree, Juniperus communis, that furnishes every gin its highly recognisable and distinctive taste. The aromatic complexity of juniper starts with mild to bitter-resinous-piney notes, and then moves on to spicy hints of fresh forest and herbal aromas, followed by smooth and sometimes even slightly floral finishes, reflecting the holistic gustatorial experience of the typical blue juniper berries. Depending on their country of origin, the spectrum of flavours can vary from bitter to sweet, spicy to floral, etc. At CARBOCRAFT, we specialise in premium juniper berries, sourced from various origins, to provide our customers with the full spectrum of available juniper flavour notes that are trending today.
With their fresh “citrusy” notes and a mild to sharp spicy flavour, coriander seeds form a sensual aromatic duet with the bitter-sweet juniper berries to give each gin its individual character. After specific processing of the seeds, a wide selection of premium coriander varieties is another key element of the CARBOCRAFT range of BOTANICALs.
Together with juniper berries and coriander seeds, angelica root makes up the “big three” ingredients in gin. The bitterness of fine earthy and woody notes dominates, continuing with a mild to strong astringency to finish with a sophisticated sharpness.
The roots of the orris (Iris germanica) harvested in Southern Europe and Northern Africa stabilise the gin flavour structure with a velvety texture and subtle earthy notes. Licorice root, from a plant native to Europe and Asia (Glycyrrhiza glabra), is often considered the “sweet secret” of the gin recipe. Whether cut or ground, the dominant sweetness is permeated by a warm earthy and woody character giving the gin a sweet base.
