Gin is a distilled alcoholic drink that derives its flavour from juniper berries and other botanical ingredients. Gin interestingly originated as a medicinal liquor made by monks and alchemists across Europe, as a matter of fact. The modern gin as we know it today, was then modified in Flanders and the Netherlands, to provide aqua vita from distillates of grapes and grains. It then became an object of commerce in the spirits industry. Gin became popular in England after the introduction of jenever, a Dutch and Belgian liquor that was originally consumed as a medicine. Although this development had been taking place since the early 17th century, gin became widespread after the 1688 Glorious Revolution led by William of Orange and the subsequent import restrictions on French brandy. Gin subsequently emerged as the national alcoholic drink of England, and the rest…is history as they say.

CORIANDER SEEDS

Together with juniper berries and coriander seeds, angelica root makes up the “big three” ingredients in gin. The bitterness of fine earthy and woody notes dominates, continuing with a mild to strong astringency to finish with a sophisticated sharpness.
The roots of the orris (Iris germanica) harvested in Southern Europe and Northern Africa stabilise the gin flavour structure with a velvety texture and subtle earthy notes. Licorice root, from a plant native to Europe and Asia (Glycyrrhiza glabra), is often considered the “sweet secret” of the gin recipe. Whether cut or ground, the dominant sweetness is permeated by a warm earthy and woody character giving the gin a sweet base.
