As a leading and competent supplier of caramel, it is of paramount importance to understand and underscore the significant difference between caramel colour and caramelised sugar.

    • Caramel colour is classified as a “food additive” and is produced by the controlled heat treatment of carbohydrates (sugar, sucrose, other common sugars suitable for human consumption), combined with an EU-approved list of chemical additives such as salts, acids, alkalis, ammonium and sulphite compounds. Caramel colour, appearing as a grey-brown liquid, produced this way is therefore labelled with an E-number i.e. E150 (a-d), and is typically and solely used to give various food stuffs a brown colour, without imparting any flavour, taste or odour to the food stuff.
    • Caramelised sugar, on the other hand, which has a fresh, reddish-brown colour in liquid form, is produced by the slow, controlled heat treatment of carbohydrates (sugar, sucrose, other common sugars suitable for human consumption), without any addition of chemical additives at all. Caramelised sugar is therefore not regarded as a food additive with an E-number, but is instead classified as a 100% “food stuff” with completely “clean-labelling” on the ingredients list of the food end-product. Caramelised sugar is produced during a slow, tightly controlled, gradual caramelisation process, where the flavour compounds and colour molecules are developed at the beginning of the decomposition of the sugar and simultaneously retained all throughout the ensuing heat treatment cycle. Caramelised sugar is therefore used to impart well-rounded caramel flavour and burnt sugar notes, as well as caramel odour, whilst at the same time providing typical caramel reddish-brown colour to food stuffs

At CARBOCRAFT, and in close partnership with company FKO, our focus is on the supply of caramelised sugar and our products add caramel flavour and caramel colour to your food products, with completely “free-labelling”, without any E-numbers.

As you can see, CARBOCRAFT, in association with Felix Koch Offenbach FKO, is well-versed when it comes to CARAMEL and TOFFEE matters. We regard ourselves as the CARAMEL and TOFFEE champions! Here is a further application index for you evidencing just how versatile and adaptable our products are in so many ways:

  • In meat products and “meat-free” vegan “meat” products, same as above, our caramel products impart a “well-rounded” taste profile, provide enhanced fried and roasted flavour notes, introduce luxurious reddish-brown “roasted” colour shades and are 100% clean label (free of artificial colours and pigments). This way, through the use of our caramel products, the meat-free products acquire a more authentic “meaty” appearance and taste profile!
  • In wet and dry petfood, our caramelised sugar adds value as an innovative ingredient that is free of 4-MEI and THI, two potential contaminants that can be found in pet food. 4-MEI (4-Methylimidazole) is a chemical compound that can form in some types of caramel colouring during the manufacturing process. It is classified as a potential human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). THI (Tetrahydroisoquinolines) are a group of chemical compounds that can be produced during the process of cooking meat and other protein sources commonly used in pet food. Pet food manufacturers take steps to minimize the levels of 4-MEI and THI in their products by using high-quality ingredients such as our 100% natural and additive-free caramelised sugar.
  • As in meat products for human consumption, our caramelised sugar products impart a “well-rounded” taste profile, provide enhanced fried and roasted flavour notes and significantly support the typically desired “brown” notes in petfood, whilst simultaneously introducing luxurious reddish-brown “roasted” colour shades, and improving the smell and sensorial properties of a premium petfood, thus increasing the overall palatability by cats and dogs.
  • Extensive independent kennel research conducted by our supplier FKO has shown that petfood containing our caramelised sugar generally has a higher preference ratio (by up to more than 60%) compared to pet food containing ordinary caramel colour.
